Do’s:

Create a good cover letter (including motivation for your application)
• Have a clear resume (not too long and easy-to-read layout)
• Be sure to bring several copies to the interview
• Listen well during the interview
• Be well informed about the company and the position (research on Websites and other applicable sources)
• Prepare questions to be asked in the interview that relate to the company and your targeted position
• Send a thank you letter or e-mail after interview
• Be pro-active: follow-up if you haven’t heard back from the Recruiter
• Send your resume to the correct contact, as indicated on the job posting (resumes to President or CEO may not always make it to the recruiters desk within application window)
• Develop numerous STAR stories (Situation-Task-Action-Results) that describe your strengths and job target skill areas
• Practice your STAR stories
• Conduct practice interviews
• Get the names of each interviewer
• Keep jewelry and dress tasteful
• Greet the receptionist or secretary in a friendly manner
• Establish rapport and remember that first impressions are lasting
• Use a firm handshake
• Smile, speak clearly and generate enthusiasm
• Try to relax. Remember that the interviewer might be nervous and uncomfortable with the interview process. You are selling and evaluating each other
• Allow the interviewer to lead the discussion, but try to add information that reinforces your strengths at every opportunity
• Use active listening techniques to fully respond to each question asked
• Take limited notes as needed
• Be sensitive to nonverbal cues and keep answers brief as appropriate
• Express your interest in the job if you think it is a good match
• Inquire when a decision will be reached to fill the position
• Try to gain an understanding of the next step in the hiring process
• Maintain detailed notes regarding your reaction to the position, interviewers and company

Don’ts:

• Use an inappropriate e-mail address (like hotbabe@aol.com) or unprofessional voicemail as your contact information
• Talk too much during interview
• Arrive late for an interview
• Ask about compensation + benefits during first round of interviews
• Be overly confident (act like you “know it all”)
• Badmouth a previous employer
• Chew gum
• Smoke immediately before an office interview
• Order any alcoholic beverages during a meal interview
• Glance at your watch
• Exaggerate or lie
• Interrupt the interviewer
• Fidget, play with your hair, tap your fingers, etc.
• Become defensive, argumentative or defeated if objections are raised regarding your qualifications; continue to calmly provide additional information about your strengths and potential
